He immediately blinked to his office as the Vanquisher landed in its parking spot.
Blue, what is the status of my men?
Everything is working out as predicted. The drones float aimlessly in space. I wonder why that is?
So do we. But I have no clear answer. It appears, as long as someone is directing them, they are aggressive and work together as one. But once the core of the moon is destroyed, they are mindless. They will attack if a target appears in range, but as long as we keep our distance, they donât react.
That is not a design fault. They are made this way.
We agree. But we never discovered the reason behind that. They are just trained to do that.
They are like a twisted version of the Hive. I dislike them.
Korbin could only grunt in response.
Thoughts about her came to his mind. The stoic girl in the slave collar.
That is different. It was necessary and voluntary. The first Hive Queen was a monster. It took a millennia to defeat her. After that, all future Hive Queens were undergoing vigorous training. And the hibernation is part of it. We are dependent on the Hive Lord. Without him, we are nothing. Donât see it as punishment. The loss of my former Lord nearly drove me insane. But we can shut ourselves in. It is also a tool for healing.
For ten thousand years?
That is not how it should be.
How did you even survive?
I know not. I know I was lucky. Who knows where my path led me. But us Weavers, we are sturdy. We can survive the harshest environments and endure without sustenance, only kept alive by our magic.
What?
He was shocked.
Do not be so surprised. Ten thousand years flow by like a breeze in the wind if your mind is shut down.
This is hard to contemplate.
You are young. In time, understanding will come.
I see.
You do not. But that also will change. Was my service adequate?
More than that.
Then maybe, give me more than a little tribe. My mind is restless.
I will think about it.
Thank you, Hive Lord.
With a sigh he broke the connection.
He checked the progress of the cleanups. So far the three Saints had been their only casualties. Against millions of Reavers. The thought alone was ridiculous.
âMaximus, give me the Queen.â
Of course.
After a moment a screen appeared in front of him.
The Queen was on her throne, the seat next to her empty.
âLord Admiral. We are forever in your debt. We saw the destruction of the moon. Are there still many enemies?â
âThe swarm is still out there, but since the moon is destroyed, the Reavers are mindless. We are cleaning up as we speak.â
The Queen sighed in relief.
âWe owe you our lives. In more than one case. I expect you for dinner. We owe you a boon as a sign of our gratitude.â
Korbin shook his head.
âThere is no time. We detected more moons. They are not here. Once I get word from the other task groups, I will gather my troops and leave. Your men will have to clean up by themselves.
